Government And Policies Of The United States - 1584 Words

My Government, My Religion Why They Shouldn’t be the same Bettina Reinders Bellevue University â€Å"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect union†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Madison 1787) This statement represents that the law and policies that govern a nation should be best suited for the many and opposed to a specific group or set of people. No one political view point or party should be able to dictate policy for the many. Every political group has an agenda and things that their policies should be in place for all, but the truth of the matter is that in order to keep the peace we need to implement policies that may be more liberal but yet more can agree to follow than policies that are specific to a particular party and expect the masses to prescribe to that particular way of thinking. It shouldn’t be said that we do not take other political party’s views into consideration, however no one party should be able to dictate policy for all. Also, there are certain political fashions that will mainly focus on social issues and ignore policies concerning defense, legal, industry, transportation, etc. In order for a government to be effective I think you need a healthy mix of social policy and economic policy, and others. Political parties that focus on just social issues could cause problems because that is not only the focus of a government. And enlisting and choice plays a polar function during such state of affairss. With deficit of accomplishments and the rapid spread of new engineering exercising considerable force per unit area on how employers perform enlisting and choice activities. it is recommended to carry on a bit-by-bit strategic analysis of enlisting and choice procedures. With mention to the current context. this paper presents an acute reappraisal of old literature on the enlisting and choice procedure. This paper is chiefly based on an analysis of six pieces of literature conducted by practicians and research workers in the field of Human Resource direction. Assorted research workers have contributed to the field of HRM. and have offered intensive and profound cognition on the subdivisions of HRM such as scientific enlisting and choice. Manpower direction. Job analysis. Need and intent of Recruitment. and so on. Literature Review: Definition:Edwin Flippo defines Recruitment and choice procedure as â€Å"A procedure of seeking for prospective employees and exciting and promoting them to use for occupations in an organisation. † In simpler footings. enlisting and choice are coincident procedures and are void without each other. They significantly differ from each other and are indispensable components of the organisation. It helps in detecting the possible and capablenesss of appliers for expected or existent organisational vacancies. It is a nexus between the occupations and those seeking occupations. Work by Korsten ( 2003 ) and Jones et Al. ( 2006 ) : Harmonizing to Korsten ( 2003 ) and Jones et Al. ( 2006 ) . Human Resource Management theories emphasize on techniques of enlisting and choice and sketch the benefits of interviews. appraisal and psychometric scrutinies as employee choice procedure. They farther stated that recruitment procedure may be internal or external or may besides be conducted online. Typically. this procedure is based on the degrees of enlisting policies. occupation posters and inside informations. advertisement. occupation application and questioning procedure. appraisal. determination devising. formal choice and preparation ( Korsten 2003 ) . Jones et Al. ( 2006 ) suggested that illustrations of enlisting policies in the health care. concern or industrial sector may offer penetrations into the procedures involved in set uping recruitment policies and specifying managerial aims. Successful enlisting techniques involve an acute analysis of the occupation. the labour market scenario/ conditions and interviews. and psychometric trials in order to happen out the potencies of occupation searchers. Furthermore. little and average sized endeavors lay their custodies on interviews and appraisal with chief concern related to occupation analysis. emotional intelligence in inexperient occupation searchers. and corporate societal duty. Other attacks to choice outlined by Jones et Al. ( 2006 ) include several types of interviews. function drama. group treatments and group undertakings. and so on. Any direction procedure revolves around enlisting and failure in enlisting may take to troubles and unwanted barriers for any company. including indecent effects on its profitableness and inappropriate grades of staffing or employee accomplishments ( Jones et al. 2006 ) . In extra. deficient enlisting may ensue into deficiency of labor or hinderances in direction determination devising. and the overall enlisting procedure can itself be advanced and amended by following with direction theories. Harmonizing to these theories. the recruitment procedure can be mostly enhanced by agencies of Rodge rs seven point program. Munro-Frasers quintuple scaling system. personal interviews. every bit good as psychological trials ( Jones et al. 2006 ) . Work by Alan Price ( 2007 ) : Monetary value ( 2007 ) . in his work Human Resource Management in a Business Context. officially defines enlisting and choice as the procedure of recovering and pulling able applications for the intent of employment. He states that the procedure of enlisting is non a simple choice procedure. while it needs direction determination devising and wide planning in order to name the most appropriate work force. There bing competition among concern endeavors for enrolling the most possible workers in on the tract towards making inventions. with direction determination devising and employers trying to engage merely the best appliers who would be the best tantrum for the corporate civilization and moralss specific to the company ( Price 2007 ) . This would reflect the fact that the direction would peculiarly shortlist able campaigners who are good equipped with the demands of the place they are using for. including squad work. Since possessing qualities of being a squad participant would be indispensable in any direction place ( Price 2007 ) . Work by Hiltrop ( 1996 ) : Hiltrop ( 1996 ) was successful in showing the relationship between the HRM patterns. HRM-organizational schemes every bit good as organisational public presentation. He conducted his research on HR director and company functionaries of 319 companies in Europe sing HR patterns and policies of their several companies and discovered that employment security. preparation and development plans. enlisting and choice. teamwork. employee engagement. and in conclusion. forces be aftering are the most indispensable patterns ( Hiltrop 1999 ) . As a affair of fact. the primary function of HR is to develop. control. manage. incite. and achieve the committedness of the employees. The findings of Hiltrop’s ( 1996 ) work besides showed that selectively engaging has a positive impact on organisational public presentation. and in bend provides a significant practical penetration for executives and functionaries involved. Furthermore. staffing and choice remains to be an country of significant involvement. With enlisting and choice techniques for efficient hiring determinations. high acting companies are most likely to pass more clip in giving developing peculiarly on communicating and team-work accomplishments ( Hiltrop 1999 ) . Furthermore the determination that there is a positive connexion bing between house public presentations and preparation is consistent with the human capital point of view. Hence. Hiltrop ( 1996 ) suggests the directors need to develop HR patterns that are more focussed on preparation in order to accomplish competitory benefits. Work by Jackson et Al. ( 2009 ) and Bratton and Gold ( 1999 ) : As discussed by Jackson et Al. ( 2009 ) . Human resource direction attacks in any concern organisation are developed to run into corporate aims and materialisation of strategic programs via preparation and development of forces to achieve the ultimate end of bettering organisational public presentation every bit good as net incomes. The nature of enlisting and choice for a company that is prosecuting HRM attack is influenced by the province of the labor market and their strength within it. Furthermore. it is necessary for such companies to supervise how the province of labor market connects with possible recruits via the projection of an image which will hold an consequence on and reenforce applicant outlooks. Work of Bratton A ; Gold ( 1999 ) suggest that organisations are now developing theoretical accounts of the sort of employees they desire to enroll. and to acknowledge how far applicants correspond to their theoretical accounts by agencies of dependable and valid techniques of choice. Nonetheless. the research workers have besides seen that such theoretical accounts. mostly derived from competence models. surrogate strength in companies by bring forthing the appropriate cognition against which the occupation searchers can be assessed. However. enlisting and choice are besides the initial phases of a duologue among applications and the company that shapes the employment relationship ( Bratton A ; Gold 1999 ) . This relationship being the kernel of a company’s work force development. failure to admit the importance of finding outlook during enlisting and choice can take to the loss of high quality occupation searchers and take the initial phase of the employment relationship so down as to do the achievement of desirable HRM outcomes highly hard. In the sentiment of Bratton and Gold ( 1999 ) . enlisting and choice patterns are indispensable features of a duologue driven by the thought of â€Å"front-end† burden processes to develop the societal relationship among appliers and an organisation. In this relationship. both parties make determinations throughout the enlisting and choice and it would be important for a company to recognize that high-quality occupation searchers. pulled by their position of t he organisation. might be lost at any degree unless applications are provided for realistic organisation every bit good as work description. In position of Jackson et Al. ( 2009 ) and Bratton A ; Gold ( 1999 ) appliers have a specific position of outlooks about how the company is traveling to handle them ; enlisting and choice Acts of the Apostless as an chance to clear up this position. Furthermore. one technique of developing the position. suggested by Bratton and Gold ( 1999 ) . are realistic occupation prevues or RJPs that may take the signifier of instance surveies of employees and their overall work and experiences. the chance to â€Å"cover† person at work. occupation samples and pictures. The chief aim of RJPs is to let for the outlooks of occupation searchers to go more realistic and practical. RJPs tend to take down initial outlooks sing work and a company. thereby doing some applications to choose themselves ; nevertheless RJPs besides increase the grade of organisation committedness. occupation satisfaction. employee public presentation. assessment and occupation endurance among occupation searchers wh o can go on into employment ( Bratton A ; Gold 1999 ) Jackson et Al. ( 2009 ) . Work by Silzer et Al ( 2010 ) : However. the procedure of enlisting does non discontinue with application of campaigning and choice of the appropriate campaigners. but involves prolonging and retaining the employees that are selected. as stated by Silzer et Al. ( 2010 ) . Work of Silzer et Al. ( 2010 ) was mostly concerned with Talent direction. and through their work they were successful in deciding issues like whether or non endowment is something one can be born with or is it something that can be acquired through development. Harmonizing to Silzer et Al ( 2010 ) . that was a nucleus challenge in planing talent systems. confronting the organisation and among the senior direction. The lone solution to decide the concern of achieving efficient talent direction was by following fully-executable enlisting techniques. Regardless of a well-drawn practical program on enlisting and choice every bit good as engagement of extremely qualified direction squad. companies following enlisting procedures may confront important obstructions in execution. As such. theories of HRM can give penetrations in the most effectual attacks to recruitment even though companies will hold to use their in house direction accomplishments for using generic theories across peculiar organisational contexts. Word conducted by Silzer et Al ( 2010 ) described that the primary aim of successful endowment schemes is to make both a instance every bit good as a design for developing the endowment schemes within a dynamic and extremely intensive economic system wherein acquisition. deployment and saving of human capital-talent that affair. . shapes the competitory advantages and success of many companies ( Silzer et al. 2010 ) . Work by Taher et Al. ( 2000 ) : Toward that end Taher et Al. ( 2000 ) carried out a survey to review the value-added and non-value activities in a enlisting and choice procedure. The strategic work force planning of a company. preparation and development programme. public presentation assessment. wages system and industrial dealingss. was besides suitably outlined in the survey. This survey was based on the fact that efficient HR planning is an kernel of organisation success. which flows of course into employee enlisting and choice ( Taher et al. 2000 ) . Therefore. demand instead than provide must be the premier focal point of the enlisting and choice procedure and a greater accent must be put on planning. oversing and control instead than mediation. Widening this rule. a realistic attack to recruitment and choice procedure was demonstrated. and the survey found that an organisation is efficient merely when the value it commands exceeds the monetary value involved in finding the procedure of determination devising or merchandise. In other words. value-added and non-value added activities associated with a company’s enlisting and choice procedure impacts its function in making motivated and skilled work force in the state ( Taher et al. 2000 ) . Therefore. the survey identified the waiting clip. review clip and filing clip as non value added undertakings and the cost of advertizement as the lone value added activity in the overall procedure. Taher et Al. ( 2000 ) investigated the enlisting and choice subdivision of Bangladesh Open University. It was found that whenever the enlisting and choice section of BOU received a recruitment petition of new appliers from other subdivisions. the functionaries failed to immediately publicize the vacancy in assorted media. The university had to follow some long consecutive stairss prior to making so. After the vacancy is publically advertised. what followed were the bureaucratic formalities and complications together with review and supervising by two sections thereby doing unneeded waiting in the enlisting and choice procedure that finally increases the cost of enlisting by maintaining the organization’s image at interest. The survey besides witnessed some sum of repeat taking top ographic point at every measure of enlisting where the applications of appliers go arounding about excessively many sections for confirmations. This insistent work tends to prosecute unneeded individuals for a individual undertaking that consequences in unneeded hold in the determination and unfair wastage of work force. After careful consideration of similar jobs in the BOU. Taher et Al. ( 2006 ) recommended for amending the enlisting procedure by saying that foremost processes like occupation analysis and seeking internal and external beginnings must be followed by direct advertizement of the station as the HR’s ain duty. and non by any intermediate functionaries. This will extinguish the non-value activities. Second. Taher et Al ( 2000 ) suggested a ‘system’ to be introduced to ease the several section to analyze the shortlisted campaigners. which can be done merely by the petition of the HR section. A medical aid must be sought by BOU in respects to the physical or mental abilities of appliers for the occupation map every bit good as their workers compensation and hazard. A process needs to be devised refering to the privateness and confidentiality of medical studies. Therefore. this privateness and lessening in noon-value added activity of the medical test can be sustained efficaciously by proving the appliers via contracted medical advisers. or in-house physicians. Use of a computing machine based HR system should be installed in BOU to pull off the pool of information about employees and to do the organisation to take just-in-time HR enlisting and choice determinations. Therefore. any organisation is encouraged to development real-time enlisting schemes that must try to bring forth a pool of suitably qualified and well-experienced persons so as to efficaciously originate the choice schemes and determinations. In kernel. the possible applications are encouraged to use for the unfastened vacancies and besides the relevant sections can prosecute in enrolling the best campaigners to upgrade the department’s public presentation ( Taher et al. 200 0 ) . Decision: It can be clearly concluded that for a company to win all it takes is the proper enlisting and choice schemes which besides shapes the overall work force direction of the company. By conclude this literature reappraisal. the survey emphasizes on the fact that the enlisting and choice procedure is integrated with other procedures such as strategic program of the company. preparation and development strategies. compensation. rewarding/incentive system. public presentation assessment. and in conclusion. industrial dealingss. Furthermore. harmonizing to Silzer et Al ( 2010 ) . there exist several grounds why the most evident information have been more promising ; including the well-structured nature of interviews. the usage of questionnaires based on a occupation analysis. inclusion of panel of interviewers. the pattern of note-making during the interview. and the usage of evaluation graduated table based on behavioral factors to estimate the interviewee’s replies all play an buil t-in portion in the betterment of the enlisting cogency. Therefore. the survey has offered an acute reappraisal of literature of every bit many as six writers based on their single surveies and research on enlisting and choice procedures. Relationship in the Tempest Essay Example

Relationship in the Tempest Paper Prospero and Mirandas relationship in the Tempest is a strongly bonded one. However, Prospero has a very strict control over Miranda, especially any aspects relating to sexual relations. Prospero loves having and controlling power, and Miranda is another thing to add to his list, which he can have complete power over. Like every parent and their children, they are bound to have arguments at some points through their life, but these hardly change the relationship between them. In the time that Shakespeare was writing this play, woman played less important roles in society that men did, so we have to take this into account. There are also many different ways in interpreting what Shakespeare has said, so sometimes, we have to choose what we, ourselves think is right. From the beginning of the play, we can tell that Prospero and Mirandas relationship is a strong one, when Prospero uniforms her of their past. Miranda is obviously very close to her father, because when he tells Miranda about being usurped by his false brother Antonio, this immediately provokes hatred in Miranda. If she wasnt so close to her father, and did not love him as much, then she wouldnt have been so moved by what she just heard. She says:  I should sin  To think but nobly of my Grandmother;  Good wombs have born bad sons.  This quotation expresses her disbelief in the feat of such a good and honourable woman producing such an evil son. Prospero says:  Thou was thou did preserve me.  The word preserve seems to show that even when he was crying and groaning, Miranda was what kept him going, kept him determined to survive. This shows how strong their relationship is and how much love that Prospero has for Miranda even though some of the time; he does not always show it. Since arriving on the island, Prospero has had to do a lot of things for Miranda, including p being her tutor, as there are no teachers on the island to educate Miranda:  Have I thy schoolmaster, made thee more profit  Than other princes.  Because Prospero is such a great man, he has been able to give her better education than other princes. The love and kindness in the relationship is reciprocal, as Miranda expresses her gratefulness towards her father:  Heavens thank you fort.  Next the audience witness Prospero using his magic in order to lull Miranda to sleep so that he might have to chance to speak with his magical sprite Ariel. In this way, Prospero uses sleep to separate his family life and his business of bringing his enemies to justice. Miranda says:  The strangeness of your story put  Heaviness in me. Shakespeare uses this power of Prosperos to allow sub-plots into the play, and even mystery in the plot, and the characters within the play. For example, the audience is aware of Prosperos dialogue with Ariel and the history of Ariel, Sycorax and Caliban whereas Miranda is ignorant of this. Prospero may have wished to protect Mirandas innocence by putting her to sleep so that she would not know about Ariel or his torment as a result of the witch Sycorax. Whatever the reason, Prospero uses sleep to remove the complications, so that he may speak with Ariel openly without having to answer any questions of explain anything to Miranda. However, other people may take this power as the easy way out, and that he cannot be bothered to explain anything to Miranda. To others, it may seem that he is keeping something from his daughter, and he shouldnt be doing this. I believe that the first reason is the real reason, but we are left to make our own choice.  Prospero shows great caring towards Miranda, and a good example of this is after Ariel and Prospero have spoken, and it is Mirandas turn to awake:  Awake, dear heart, awake; thou has slept  Well.  The words dear heart express the caring feeling towards Miranda, and also shows us what Miranda possesses.

Economic Enviornment Of Fdi In Uae Economics Essay Essay Example Economic Enviornment Of Fdi In Uae Economics Essay Essay Economic Enviornment Of Fdi In Uae Economics Essay Essay Mr Ali feels that they would be small affected by the Torahs and hopes that the growing of company continues. 5.0 Decision The environment for FDI in UAE is positive and has been pulling financess in the state from all over the universe. FDI has been a major cause of the GDP growing and creative activity of its image as a globalized economic system. The state gives entree to states to the trading universe therefore broadening their client base economically due to absence of trade barriers in the state. Creation of free trade zones is the major attractive force to corporate investors and multinationals from all over the universe. Most FDI have taken signifier of forward perpendicular or horizontal integrating. However, over a period of clip, although the policies have been modified to liberalise the trading environment and attractive force of FDI, the authorities has failed to take notice of the increasing costs of operations bared by the companies. Therefore, endurance of little sized concerns in the state can be put to inquiry in the hereafter. Western Civilization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Western Civilization - Essay Example Despite it being the case conflict kept emerging but was taken a notch high during the medieval. At the time the world witnessed a conquest among nations while striving at dominance. Most lives were lost before peace realization. It latter emerged that they were unlikely to achieve much while fighting. During the struggle nations were ruled by monarchs, the kings prided themselves in strong armies made up of skilled men. The Roman Empire was perhaps one of the greatest kingdoms. Its influence span far and wide across the entire European continent, kings graced its reign but as a result of revolutionary ideologies among some and crave for power these among other factors led to its demise. While still a central power then Roman citizen had the advantage of carrying out their business without restriction, they however needed to pay their respect to the ruling elite while practicing the law in place (Kelly, Rees & Shuter, 61). The law was however discriminative and never favored all owin g to its tendency to limit freedom. This implied that failure to adhere to it had its own disadvantages. Penalties were also applicable yet they were too inhuman and may perhaps be the reason why some rebelled while striving at liberation. Everyone was however obliged to pay tax to the central government. The monarch government owned all existing resource; people were only tasked to take good care of it. The nobles thus manipulated the entire population during their reigned; on the flip side most of the population was simply taken through a harsh reality and could at times find it had to make a decent living. Power had thus been corrupted by selfish intend to cherish the elite at the expense of the larger population. While some kingdoms had a strong grip on their regions some become more ambitious and were keen on dominating a wider region. This was unlikely to come handy without strife. It only called for wars and counter acquisition owing to such regions being dominated by other k ingdoms. In order to achieve this objective it was important to hire more personnel to counter the enemy; some states had over 400,000 soldiers at the time but needed enough resource to actualize this dream (Rogers, DeVries & France, 174). Religion played a great role at the time; for instance the Roman catholic was perhaps one of the most prominent religions and has carried on till to date. Several values were championed by religion while trying to ensure people enhanced their spiritual aspect while worshiping their creator in obedience to his word. This was however distinct from the common law in practice but was perhaps well inscribed for all to obey. It too faced a lot of opposition with the emergence of other religions as fellow worshipers some of who were not pleased by practices being championed. One of the most dominant has been the raise of the protestant church. Some urged that this was a rebellious movement depicting the church in wrong light but may have been largely due to monotony in tradition by its predecessor yet it didn’t avail much while aiming at transforming man (Robinson & Leyla Rouhi., 25). Men were on the other hand so much oppressed and were in need of solutions to their ailing hearts. One of the most pressing issues was the concept of salvation which was never handled well in the past. During the medieval age people practiced absolutism; this refers to a situation where one was empowered to oversee leadership over a certain region. It was so common in the past and was perhaps the reason behind kingship. At the time democracy was never applied; people were however under the mercy of those in power. During ones reign one was likely to do it without necessarily putting a law in place to actualize his objective;

General description, meaning of the song Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

General description, meaning of the song - Essay Example He is reminiscent of the times when he was at loggerheads with his mother and ended up being kicked out of the house but remembers that once he was convicted the mother was the first to visit him in jail. The song takes the listener through the harsh life of living in the streets and the plight that the mothers have to pass through in order to make ends meet for their children. The song is filled with the ‘gangster’ life that the street members used to live in. The song takes one through the experiences that the life in the streets meant for the people that lived the street life day in day out. Although they made ends meet and had a living it took a lot of effort to ensure that they were safe with the gang members constantly being tracked by the police. Tupac however justifies the people that engaged in thug life in the streets asserting that the life was only to ensure that they got some money that they later used to help their families. According to Tupac (41-43) â€Å"I needed money on my own so I started Slangin and I ain’t guilty because even though I sell rocks it feels good putting money in the mailbox† meaning that although he was engaged in different evils while on the streets he was doing it for the good of the family and not for his own benefits and also to pay for his own rent. Tupac reiterates that life in the street s is hard and one has to adapt to make it out there since everyone lives for themselves however he still remembers the huge role that his mother played. The song highlights the plight of different people on the streets especially those that are of age and are wishing to join the different gangs to make it in life. It is an illustration of the hustle of the gang members and the different reasons that leads the people in the society to join the gangs. Poverty and poor living conditions is also clearly identified as a

Life of Pi Analysis Essay Example for Free

Life of Pi Analysis Essay Having just experienced the sinking of his family’s ship, and being put onto a life boat with only a hyena, Pi felt completely lost and alone. Then he met a familiar face from his family’s zoo, Pi saw the Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker onboard. His first reaction was to save the life of Richard Parker so that he may have a companion, and a protector aboard the lifeboat. Suddenly Pi realizes just what he is doing. He is saving the life of Richard Parker, by welcoming him, a 450 pound Bengal tiger, onto the small lifeboat. He experiences a change of heart when helping the tiger onto the boat. Pi realizes that he is now posing a threat on his own life. With Richard Parker on the boat, Pi is faced with not only the fight to survive stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but the fight to survive living with a meat eating tiger. The change of heart that Pi experiences might possibly mean that he is an impulsive thinker. It may mean that he often does something on impulse without thinking it through, and then later regrets his actions. Though he was having bad experiences onboard, Pi maintains his religious beliefs while on the life boat through his daily prayers. He takes time aside each day to say the prayers that he always would say. In one instance, he turns where he believes Mecca is located, and prays his traditional prayers towards Mecca. Pi also often states that he will include specific animals in his prayers, such as the zebra aboard his lifeboat, and the first fish that he ever killed. With Pi keeping his ritual prayers going, it helped him to survive. He made comparisons between that of Orange Juice, the orangutan, and the Virgin Mary, and would also often bring up Jesus on the cross. Truly, Pi’s religious faith remained strong throughout his journey on the Pacific Ocean.

Reworking the Environmental Movement :: Essays Papers

Reworking the Environmental Movement The first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, aimed to protest the corporate and governmental abuse of the environment. In its success, an aftermath of environmental awareness ensued rooted in the movements’ ethic of ecological education and scientific questioning of the human impact on nature. Environmentalism, an off-shoot of scientific hypotheses and ethics, created an impetus for federal legislation. In the subsequent years, Congress passed many highly successful acts committed to the protection of natural resources and human health. The objectives of environmental activists were being realized with increasing enthusiasm in the democratic system. In the 1980s during the Reagan revolution, congressional spending was forced against the proverbial firing squad. Arguments surfaced that too much public money was being spent on the environment and that the federal government should play a much reduced role in federal regulation. The conservative voice criticized the governmental restrictions on private property with the intent of environmental protection. It was seen as a breach of the Fifth Amendment that prohibits the taking of property â€Å"without just compensation† called federal â€Å"takings.† Since then, the debate has sprung an environmental policy backlash consisting of the â€Å"property rights movement,† which contends the above argument, and its sister movement, â€Å"wise-use,† that supports the privatization of natural resources. Reagan’s deregulation and laxity of environmental standards fueled the fire of the movement’s intensity in which national groups became larger and more politically driven. However, in the face of the backlash, environmentalism was caught between its ethic to protect and its struggle to be heard as an influential political voice. Thus, the movement has suffered great polarization, divided internally into camps that still exist today. One of the most dangerous aspects of the environmental movement’s political situation is its misuse of science to predict almost apocalyptic scenarios to promote their agenda. This paper intends to provide a criticism of environmental policies based on three criteria: the internal decay of environmental organizations, its undiminished reliance on broad governmental regulation, and the dangerous politicization of science to meet narrow group interests. Even the most philanthropic organizations, such as environmental groups, are plagued with heterogeneous agendas. Internal to the environmental groups’ seemingly monolithic facade are many divisions that corrupt the groups’ progress. The movement’s best known division is between the national and local groups. The national groups cover many environmental issues and are most closely tied with the federal government.

Louis XVI

Louis XVI was born on August 23rd, 1754 in the Palace of Versailles. He was born Louis Auguste, duc de Berry to Louis, the Dauphin of France, and Marie-Joseph of Saxony. Louis was neglected as a child in favor of his older brother, Louis, duc de Bourgogne, until he died at age seven. He was a shy and overweight. After the death of his father in 1765, Louis became the new Dauphin of France. He received strict education from the Duc de La Vauguyon, which did not sufficiently prepare him to be king. On May 16th,1770, at the age of fifteen, Louis married 14 year old Archduchess Marie Antoinette, the youngest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa. This marriage signified an alliance between France and Austria. The royal couple failed to produce an heir, later discovered to be due to Louis's sexual dysfunction. In 1774, Louis inherited the throne at 20 years old and became King Louis XVI. Despite his title, he had no qualities of a ruler and was extremely unqualified for the job. Nonetheless, he was faced with a government in deep debt and a clamor for resentment against monarchy. Louis XVI began by reinstating the parlements to gain the trust of his people. He was determined to be a good monarch. France however was an in an economic crisis. To deal with this, Louis appointed Jacques Necker as his financial advisor. Louis convoked the Estates General, but eventually removed them, causing great anger in the public. This caused the creation of the Third Estate, the National Assembly, and the Tennis Court Oath on June 20th that sparked the French Revolution. The Storming of the Bastille on July 14th confirmed the radical change in the mind of the masses towards the monarchy. French involvement in the Seven Years War left France in a disastrous economic state. Louis XVI sought to seek revenge on Britain by aiding the Americans in the American Revolution. He was eventually convinced by American Ambassador Benjamin Franklin to secretly send supplies, ammunition, and weapons to the Americans. He personally sent Rochambeau and Admiral de Grasse to aid the cause, along with a large land and naval force. Louis XVI also wished to expel the British from India. In 1782, he sealed an alliance with the Peshwa Mandhu Rao Narayan. This begun the French struggle to eliminate British control in India. On October 5th, 1789, an angry mob of Parisian working women marched on the Palace of Versailles and attempted to kill the queen. Her wasteful and extravagant lifestyle represented all that was despised about the Ancien Regime. The King and his family was then moved from Versailles to the Tuileries Palace in Paris. In June of 1791, Louis attempted to secretly flee with his family from Paris to the royalist fortress town of Montemedy on the northeastern border of France. However, they were discovered in a small town in the country and immediately taken back to Paris and placed under house arrest in the Tuileries Palace. In August of 1792, Louis was officially arrested and sent to the Temple prison. On January 15th, 1793, the Convention, composed of 721 deputies, voted King Louis XVI guilty for colluding with the Austrian invaders whom France was at war with. On Monday, January 21st, 1793, Louis XVI was stripped of all titles and honorifics by the Republic Government. On the Place de la Revolution, Citoyen Louis Capet was executed by the â€Å"national razor,† the guillotine. Be An Anthropologist

1. The concept of descent with modification, or evolution, has a great deal of evidence in its support. Indicate the major types of evidence? The concept or idea that species change and evolve into new and different species was described and was an established concept in Darwin's day this was described as descent with modification. The Concept of descent with modification has major evidence in support, in fact we no longer refer to the this adaption as descent with modification, rather it is now called biological evolution. According to our text species of living things are related in some fashion similar to a branching tree. However the process is not quite that simple adaption relies on several processes and to prove this or the evidence used to confirm this is ecology. Science uses the habitats of living organisms to explain the relationships between the organisms. Secondly scientists uses the concept of niche which is the adaptive response to an environment. In addition to this in formation science uses geological and fossil records to explain the changes and diversity that have happened between species over time, through the concepts of natural selection. Scientists believe each fossil is a piece of evidence about the way species adapted and the changes that took place over a period of time.â€Å"Humans are Old World primates† Humans however have striking similarities as well as differences from that of the chimp or gorilla. For instance vision human vision is the same as any other diurnal primate meaning we clearly see the same as monkeys and apes. Our sense of smell is the same as that of the anthropoid primate or ape. Similarly our behavior patterns are closely resembled of most old world apes, humans live in societies that -are based on collective conscious responses of a group of individuals. However as I mentioned before humans also have significant differences from that of other primates, for instance human growth, maturity, and reproduction is c learly different humans birth twins one out of every two-hundred and fifty births, human babies are born far more helpless than any other primate species. Also non human primates mature much more rapid than that of a human. The human brain is far more larger that that of any other primate human brains are three-times the size predicted against human body weight thus a larger brain indicates human primates are more intelligent than that of other primates like monkeys, or apes.3. Distinguish between members of genus Australopithecus and Paranthropus in terms of time, location, and physical features The earliest known and accepted fossils are categorized as Australopithecus or the southern ape. A well known and famous fossil known as Lucy belongs to this fossil group, fossils of Australopithecus's have been found in areas such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Chad, and South Africa and are dated as far back as 4.2 – 2.3 MYA.These primates are known as bipedal apes meaning they walk ed upright, members of this primate group also had facial features that were apelike, had brains half the size of chimpanzees, and weighed on average of one-hundred and five pounds. It is thought these primates adapted to arboreal and terrestrial environments because dental exams of their teeth indicate a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and leaves. On the contrary members of the Paranthropus primates have fossils that have also been recognized these fossils have been found in places like: Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa which are dated as far back as2.8 – 1MYA. This species was thought to have been robust in terms of features relating to eating/chewing. It was discovered this species has a skull features that indicate important chewing muscles, broad dished out faces, and large cheek bones. All traits point to diets that consist largely of vegetables, fruits, and any other foods thought to be found in open areas.4. Explain why variation in skin color is of no use in defini ng human races. In trying to use information that I have learned over the course of the last few days, it would be no use in trying to define the human race based on skin color because all humans have essentially come from the same place meaning we have all developed through evolution. Basically my understanding was that people/ humans ultimately developed stronger or weaker pigment depending on where there lived after the evolved for instance darker people may have come from hotter places where a deeper or darker pigment was needed to protect a person from the sun. Or on the other hand a lighter person assumed lighter pigment because they did not live on a place so hot so their skin or pigment adapted to the area in which they lived.

Jaws in detail essays

Jaws in detail essays JAWS was the box-office sensation of 1975 and the number-one hit movie of the decade until 1977's STAR WARS, at a time when the success or failure of a few blockbusters began to determine the course of the entire motion picture industry. Similar to several of the other huge hit movies of the 1970's, JAWS began as a novel, which was then sold to a film company prior to its publication. Yet JAWS remains solidly a director's film from the first ominous chords of John Williams' moody score. In this, his second directed film, Steven Spielberg demonstrates remarkable ability to develop a standard scary story into a sweeping adventure with the power to capture audiences and hold them in breathless suspense. The plot of JAWS is deceptively simple. A marauding Great White Shark of tremendous size begins attacking bathers in the waters off Amity Township, a New England seaside resort. Local Sheriff Brody (Roy Scheider) believes the warning of young icthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the killings will continue, but yields to the pressure of Amity mayor Vaughan (Murray Hamilton) not to close the beaches. As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, the mayor fears the loss of Amity's tourist revenue more than the possibility of additional tragedy. When the monster shark strikes again, the beaches are finally closed. Crusty shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) is retained by the Township to pursue and destroy the menace and sets out in his boat Orca, accompanied by Hooper and Brody. Guilt-ridden over his earlier decision to allow the beaches to remain open, Brody goes to sea in an effort to regain his self-estee...

Variable Costing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Variable Costing - Essay Example Product cost versus period cost Also known as inventorial costs, product costs are all those costs that are used in the acquisition and production of a product. They include direct labor costs, cost of direct materials and the manufacturing expenditure (Maher et, al 2006). They are normally assigned to an inventory account in the balance sheets and released from the stock as expenditure. Period costs are all the omissions in the product cost normally expensed on the income statement or report in the time of occurrence for example the office rent, administrative expenses and commissions on sale, which are expensed on the income statement during such periods of occurrence (Maher et, al 2006). ... The fixed manufacturing expenditure is incurred with the hope that the capital represented by these costs will be consumed in the manufacture of stock. Therefore these costs should correspond or rather be matched against the income attributed to the sale of such stock. Absorption cost needs the computation of expenditure rate for applying all the production expenses to the units that are produced during that period or else twin expenditure rates for variable manufacturing and fixed manufacturing overheads or multiple overhead rates in case the company uses the activity based costing (Hansen, et, al 2006). In variable costing, the validation is that the fixed manufacturing overhead shall be incurred in the short (er) term with no emphasis of the quantity of inventory that is produced. Even if the firm is not operating, a large portion of the fixed manufacturing overhead cannot be avoided in the short run hence the treatment of fixed manufacturing overhead as a period expanse. Though c onfusing in the sense that it implies only the direct manufacturing costs are capitalized, the fact is that the variable manufacturing overhead is also capitalized in equal measure. The name is far much less than ideal because not every variable cost is capitalized as the non manufacturing costs do not get to be capitalized as a portion of the stock or inventory in any circumstance. Usually, in variable costing, the cost of the ending stock is consisting of both the variable manufacturing overhead as well as the cost of direct manufacturing which is the materials and labor. Therefore, these are the costs for which the variable costing correspond the matching principle and as part of the inventory/stock, no other thing is

Journals - Essay Example My original story was about an innocent, successful mother named Jasmine. She had an only child that was conceived through a rigorous process of fertility treatment. Consequently, she conceived her first child at 40 years old. She then lost her husband; her son was the only thing she had as a remembrance of her husbands image. Unfortunately, her son was fatally shot and killed by a thug named Mark, who is uneducated and lives a frivolous lifestyle as a thug. After several revisions and comments from you and my classmates, my story is now about Mark, who lives his life frivolously by committing crimes to sustain his sick grandmother. He ended up shooting a student, who happened to be a city mayors son on school ground and subsequently jail for his action. The mayor is now seeking revenge for her sons unjustifiable death. She released Mark, the culprit out of Jail using deceptions to have access to him and his future kids. Her plan is to make him feel the same pain that she felt when she lost her son. However, Mark repented for his actions, and he is now a new person who wants to do what is right for the society. Also, he would like to show his appreciations to Jasmine for taking him out of jail and providing for him. Unfortunately and unbeknownst to him, he his is living with his worst nightmare. The little cartoon video you provided from Michael, the screenwriter of Pixar, who wrote Toy Story 3 helped me in reconstructing my story. He said to have my character doing the thing they love most and the world they live. For my story, the thing that Mark loves to do most is robbery. That is the life he knows without any conscience; he lives in a world of perpetrators. However, his mother is currently jailed for drugs, and his father passed away in the life of crimes. Then, the characters flaw. In Marks case, he is heavily influenced by his environments and friends that are also thugs. Then,

Assignment Example The living things respond to the environment mainly through the receptors that responds to stimuli; a stimulus is a kind of energy such as chemical energy and sunlight energy. When a substance is highly concentrated outside the cell than the concentration inside the cell, diffusion or osmosis takes place thus enabling them to multiply (Deising, 23). From the above description, it is clear that CukE and Milk enabled the cells in the culture dish to multiply since the reindeer cells were activated. To illustrate this further a given fluid that can either be containing high concentration of salt or sugar outside a cell is likely to enter the cell if the cell is lowly concentrated. A given change in the blood sugar level is described as a deviation from homeostasis that the body works in order to reverse. Due to the fact that different receptors respond to different stimuli thus causing changes in the cell, the reindeer cells were therefore stimulated by the milk to multiply. ... ion of ciliate protozoa in the year 1895 as he made a comparison between the reindeer that originated from domestic ruminant and the reindeer from the zoological garden in Germany. He concluded that both were the same, Lubinski who worked in Northern Canada with the caribou (Starr, 87) further proved these results in 1958. The UV rays originating from the sun usually have an effect on the reindeer cells in one way or another as it is described in the book of Acts Climate Impact Assessment – Scientific report`. This is well illustrated as follows; various studies have shown that the exposure of enhanced UV radiation interferes with the growth of cells whereby the larger cells are inhibited to a larger extent as compared to the smaller ones (Karentz et al). Other scientists such as Vincent and Laurion further made an evaluation in 1998 that the smaller cells resisted the UV rays on a great deal as compared to the large cells. The UV rays inhibit photosynthesis from taking place within the cell because it interferes with the whole process (Starr, 426). Therefore, the UV rays have the ability to destroy the reindeer cells thus reducing their number. The UV rays in connection to the DNA Damage Checkpoint Genes might have also played a big role in this context by lowering down the number of cells. With reference to the book of checkpoint Controls and Cancer`, it is described as a signal cascade that plays a big role in blocking the cell cycle at the metaphase, G1, G2 and in slowing down the DNA replication rate in phase S. Apart from the cell cycle blockage, the cells also respond in many different ways such as DNA repair, apoptosis and in the activation of the transcription. However, many genes have damaged the DNA checkpoint pathways (Holzapfel &Naughton, 125). As soon

Famous Thinkers Essay There are many famous thinkers that have lived on this earth who have made significant changes to everyones lives. A couple famous thinkers stand out amongst them all. These two are Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Their contributions society have been great and were based off of their personal, social and political environments. They had both sought to solve problems or issues that people faced and they were able to provide solutions and implement them. The solutions they provided all followed a creative process, which will be compared to each other, and their ideas will be critiqued to discuss what they could have done differently. Contributions to Society Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have both contributed to society in different ways. Bill Gates had gained immense wealth through the creation and sales of Microsoft Windows, and he is using this wealth for philanthropic reasons. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contributes to societies throughout the world. Their contributions range from providing vaccines in Africa, to financial services for the poor in the United States. These contributions affect society as they provide better health by helping prevent illness and helping better the lives of those less fortunate. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead the change in gaining equal civil rights for African Americans by using nonviolent civil disobedience. The Environment Mr Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in different environments which attributed to their creativity in solving problems or issues. Bill Gates was raised in a financially responsible family, and attended a preparatory school which allowed him to focus on computer programming. This environment allowed Bill Gates to excel in what he loved and create the Microsoft organization. Bill Gates gained enormous wealth through his creation of Microsoft, which he now uses for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in a rough environment. He grew up where African Americans where considered a lesser person and were segregated because of their race. This eventually lead Martin Luther King Jr. to take lead in the civil rights movement, which brought him to direct the march on Washington, D.C and give his I Have a Dream speech. Solving Problems or Issues Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. both address issues in society. Bill Gates addresses issues across the world, where Martin Luther King Jr. addresses civil rights issues in the United States. Bill Gates, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, currently aids in numerous issues throughout the world. Some of the more widely known issues are support for better education in the United States, and contributions to providing vaccinations in Africa. The issues that Bill Gates seeks to solve is poor education in the United States and to prevent disease and death in developing countries. Martin Luther King Jr. had addressed the civil rights issues to help gain equal rights for African Americans in the United States by use of nonviolent civil disobedience. Solutions The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation works through funding other non-profit organizations working towards the common goal of helping impoverished people, providing health services in developing countries, and helping better the education system in the United States. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a solution to bring the people together and spread the word of equal civil rights through speech, and motivation. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at several different venues through the United States prior to the I Have a Dream speech in Washington, D.C. At the I Have a Dream speech, over 250,000 people attended and marched, showing non-violent civil disobedience. (The Nobel Foundation, 1964). Comparing the Creative Processes Bill Gates creative process was very simple in the fact that he has money, and wants to do good with it. His process was to create the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, find non-profit organizations that share a common goal, support them financially and repeat the process. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a more complex creative process, where he had to bring the African American people together and get the leaders of the United States to listen. Martin Luther King Jr. began by traveling the United States, speaking where civil rights of African Americans where being denied. Through his speeches and travel, he brought together the African American people and accomplished the goal of gaining equal civil rights (The Nobel Foundation, 1964). Critique of Ideas The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation can take an active role in their philanthropic ideals. The foundation currently supports other non-profit organizations that work toward the foundations goals. If Bill Gates could turn the foundation around and actively work towards their goals by doing something themselves, they may achieve greater success as other organization seeking support can follow their lead. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. should not have done anything different. His motives of showing the world that the African American people are humans too, and deserve equal civil rights was conducted in a non-violent manner and accomplished his goal to gain equal civil rights. Conclusion Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have provided great contributions to society across the world and in the United States. Their environments helped bring about this desire to contribute as they had both sought to solve problems or issues faced by society. The solutions they provided all followed a creative process, which Bill Gates could have done a better job at and Martin Luther King Jr. couldnt have done better. Free Hamlet Essays: Use of Deception in Hamlet :: GCSE English Literature Coursework

Use of Deception in Hamlet Hamlet is a play by William Shakespeare about a prince named Hamlet who was spoken to by the ghost of his dead father telling Hamlet to kill his uncle Claudius (the new king) because Claudius killed him. The story revolves around Hamlet's dillema of how to kill his uncle while being deceptive enough so that no one finds out about the ghost. This essay will prove how deception is often used in Hamlet for many reasons. Claudius uses deception to protect himself from being prosecuted for his crime of killing the King. No one knows what the deal is with Gertrude because she deceives everybody by keeping to herself all the time keeping everyone from knowing anything. By using quotes from the book I will prove how these two (Claudius and Gertrude) and among a few others , use deception for different reasons and in different ways. A lot of the times it is to protect someone, or themselvs because they believe that the truth will hurt more than their lies. Claudius decieves everyone in different ways and at different times , always and only to protect himself from everyone else finding out that he killed the king. We can't truly say that he deceived Gertrude or not because we still don't know if she knows about Claudius killing the king or not because that is part of her own deception , but we know that he deceived the people and Hamlet himself (before he talks to the ghost). This next quote comes from the ghost of the king convicting Claudius of the murder ,"If thou didst ever thy dear father love- revenge his foul and most unnatural murder(p.57, act1,scene5 ,lines29-31). This quote proves that Claudius actually did commit the murder. This next quote is from Claudius himself after the funeral and the wedding giving a speach about the death of the king and the whole deal with Fortinbras,"To our most valiant brother-so much for him(p.21, act1 ,scene2 ,line25)." This quote shows that Claudius obviously doesn't have much remorse for his d ead brother and might be covering up the fact that he killed him. And we all know what that means...What does it mean?! It means that he actually is the rat and is the evil one in the play. Hamlet's deception , possibly the cruelest of all. Maybe even though Hamlet's deception was derived from Claudius's deception , it is the one that killed everybody.

Elite Essay

It is now that our political leaders and decisions have made up for what they were accounted for and have provided the back-bone of America today. Our government is what establishes America's decisions. Although some consequences can be made from what their previous aspects were, and how some of the decisions have made distrust in the government from Americans, it is only with said that, â€Å"Their failure to act, their failure to make decisions, is itself an act that is often of greater consent ounces than the decisions they do make. It's not necessarily the cause and effect of their decisions, but the act f speaking for America and doing something about the complications that arises within our world and our country to do the best they can to provide security and freedom even though there are limitations to freedom for security. Mills has stated, â€Å"The assumption that the security of the nation supposedly rests upon great secrecy of plan and intent. Along with the statement, â€Å"With the wide secrecy covering their operations and decisions, the power elite can mask their intentions, operations, and further consolidation. † I believe Mills is pointing out the directive of our national security being in the hands of the political officials because the government is the elite officials of America and has the authority to reach beyond the limits of other powers. Some may say the military is the elite of America because of the power and figure they portray. One may believe that the military is the most elite because they have more representatives, leaders and followers than those of our political leaders. One may obtain the fact that the military protects and has the secrecy of the united States in withstanding war power, but this is not accurate concerning the fact that the government has authority over the litany's actions. Mills has stated, â€Å"The military order, once a slim establishment in a context of distrust fed by State militia, has beco me the largest and most expensive feature of government.. Thus proving my element for elite power containing that the military is not established without the governments control and authority to make decisions for the military. One may believe that corporate has the most elite power over all, but corporations only have financial power not power over the decisions that are made within our country financially. Our political establishments indeed are ended by corporate, but they cannot make the decisions nor have the authority to do what the government can.The government tells corporate where to spend their money and what they can spend it on. â€Å"The decisions of a handful of corporations bear upon military and political as well as upon economic developments around the world. † Mills has stated which is proof along with my statement on economic decisions going through the government before corporate is able to take action on what they are deciding to do. In conclusion politic al officials are the most elite of the United States today. My opinion is not disregarding the other elite powers Mills has claimed above, but only withstanding that political power is the most elite out of the two other objectives. Nothing can go forward without the government's approval and action to speak for Our country. Military is just a figure of power for the people to obtain a sense of hope and security for our country along with corporate financial aid to help establish what needs to be conquered within our society and to help what decisions the government makes. â€Å"Everyone knows somebody has got to run the show, and that somebody usually does. † (C. Wright Mills)

Environmental Analysis Essay

Landfill gas is generated during the decomposition of organic substances in municipal and industrial wastes. Since it is made up of powerful greenhouse gases, primarily methane gas and carbon dioxide, the prevention of escape to atmosphere is desirable and has the added benefit of being utilised as a renewable energy source (Clarke Energy, 2014). One such company focussed on dealing with this issue is Landfill Gas Industries Pty Ltd (L.G.I. Pty Ltd) they are ‘a specialist designer, supplier, installer, and operator of systems that capture, extract and burn gas produced in landfills’ (L.G.I. Pty Ltd, 2014). L.G.I. Pty Ltd has several opportunities that could impact the company’s operations in Australia, such as government regulation, the number of councils and landfills available and the fact that all landfills require a solution to the landfill gas problem. However L.G.I. Pty Ltd also has several threats potentially impacting its operations, for example from large energy generators, large waste companies and opposition to landfill gas. With the continuing pace of global environmental awareness and a general growing consensus about the potential damage of greenhouse gases, the Australian Government may introduction legislation and associated taxation such as the use of carbon credits that are designed punish landfill owners with unabated gas emissions (Department of the Environment, 2011). A company such as L.G.I. Pty Ltd is well placed to install systems that can reduce these emissions and in turn reduce the financial penalties of operating a landfill, many of which are run by local councils and therefore paid for directly by ratepayers. With 565 local government councils in Australia (The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, 2014) and each with a need to process its residents’ garbage, many of which themselves operate landfill sites and/or have legacy landfills within their boundaries. Whilst the market has a finite limit there is considerable appeal for councils to adapt such technologies at their landfills and has the potential to generate ‘huge savings for [councils] and the environment’ (Landfill Gas Pty Ltd, 2008). L.G.I. Pty Ltd is committed to take advantage of councils’ needs by having ‘developed successful landfill gas installations on sites of all scales across Australia’ (Landfill Gas Industries Pty Ltd, 2014). Wherever there is a landfill, there is potential dangers aside from the environmental concerns unless mitigation techniques are employed, such as the risk of fire and explosion which for example  occurred in Loscoe, England in 1986 when a nearby house was destroyed (Danish EPA, 2001). There is also the potential of gas migration to occur below the surface and in turn contaminate the groundwater (Environment Protection Authority, 2008). If a landfill site is not suitable for electricity production, gas mitigation is nonetheless desired for safety and hygiene reasons. L.G.I. Pty Ltd ‘manufactures and installs its own range of state of the art flares’ (Landfill Gas Industries Pty Ltd, 2014) allowing the flammable gases to be safely burnt off. Therefore all current and legacy landfill sites are potential business for L.G.I. Pty Ltd The first major threat to L.G.I. Pty Ltd comes from existing large energy generators, such as AGL, Origin and Energy Australia, these 3 companies have a combined market share of over 60% of the energy sector (IBISWorld, 2014). As these companies have the need to supply electricity to their customers they have the desire to source viable and sustainable generation methods, AGL for example already ‘owns and operates several renewable landfill gas and biogas (sewage) generation facilities across Australia’ (AGL, 2014). If these companies decide to expand in this sector and compete for this resource, they could undermine L.G.I. Pty Ltd’s potential simply by means of more efficient access to financial capital required to setup and by the greater potential political bargaining power they possess such as when competing for tenders. Such as with large energy generators, large waste companies also pose a potential threat for L.G.I. Pty Ltd. Many councils utilise outsourced waste collection, processing, recycling and landfill operators to fulfil their needs. Operators such as Veolia and Sita which operate landfills as part of their business must ‘manage odour across [their] landfills in accordance with the Environmental Protection Licence’ (Sita, 2014). These operators have their own equipment and methods for gas mitigation and therefore pose a threat to L.G.I. Pty Ltd if more councils outsource their waste needs to private companies, they in turn aside from environmental requirements have a commercial obligation to seek profit. There is nonetheless opposition to companies that seek to turn landfill gas into electricity, for several reasons such as its relative high costs, local air pollution but namely it suggests that it is acceptable to dump waste at landfill sites rather than pursue waste minimisa tion or recycling initiatives (Shrank, 2011). Veolia states that it ‘encourages waste  minimisation and recycling’ (Veolia, 2014), however if a financial incentive exists if it fails that endeavour then people are right to be sceptical. The threat of a change in public opinion and awareness towards waste disposal could potentially impact L.G.I. Pty Ltd, particularly if they are seen as not encouraging waste minimisation or if their operations produce an unacceptable amount of air pollution. Landfill gas is an unavoidable by-product of our modern society and it possess several risks if left unmanaged to public health and safety. L.G.I. Pty Ltd is well placed to mitigate these risks and also potentially return a financial benefit to its clients, specifically local councils. In terms of opportunities, L.G.I. Pty Ltd faces a finite barrier in terms of number of landfills in Australia, it may seek to export its expertise to markets overseas to pursue further growth. It may also be of benefit to lobby government to encourage further legislation and taxation penalties regarding greenhouse gas emissions, potentially expanding its market. Of the threats facing L.G.I. Pty Ltd, the biggest is represented by existing the large companies in the electricity generating and waste disposal sectors, who invariable have better access to capital and lobbying power to further develop this industry. Finally, public opinion could negatively impact L.G.I. Pty Ltd if they are seen to be exploiting a resource which ideally should be minimised in the first instance. Clarke Energy, (2014). Free Essays on Jack London The story of â€Å"To build a Fire† by Jack London is about one mans lack of ability to survive under extremely harsh conditions. I found this story to be unappealing and a very boring read. I felt that Jack London wrote it more like an instruction manual of survival than a story, as he repeatedly attempts to teach the reader survival techniques such as building fires, avoiding dangerous springs, and navigating a creek. This idea is especially prevalent in the latter part of the story, when the main character continuously refers to what the old-timer on Sulphur Creek had told him about travel in the Yukon, especially alone. As his situation proceeds to grow worse, the narrator thinks more and more about survival ideas that he had learned or that the old-timer had told him. The story even goes as far as killing animals and using their fur as warmth in order to thaw out from the frostbite. This idea is also evident with Jack London’s character development or the narrator. He purposely created him simplistic and this enabled Mr. London to talk about survival. This concept holds true all the way to the point that we, the readers, do not even learn the narrators or the dogs name. London also tells the readers that his character â€Å"was without imagination† and â€Å"he was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances.† By not being held down by character development and deep thought by the character, London is able to constantly discuss the what to do and what not to do while in a severe environment. While you can argue this was a story of a naà ¯ve man traveling foolishly through the Yukon, one that attempts to take on nature and loses badly. Yes, this story does involve the aspect of the ignorance of man and their arrogance toward nature and peoples advice. This is portrayed by the narrator through thoughts like, â€Å"any man who was a man could travel alone.† This point is also reaffirme...
